Are the iPhone 13 Mini Reviews Favourable?
Overall, iPhone Mini 13 review writers have been impressed with the handset. The extended battery life, powerful Bionic chip and new camera features were given the most praise. However, many reviewers pointed out that visually, the phone is almost identical to its predecessor, the iPhone 12 Mini. At Trusted Reviews, David Ludlow said that although there had been a few ‘impressive changes’, overall there is not ‘a huge amount to get excited by’. The general consensus is that the iPhone 13 Mini is a great phone, but the changes are minimal. Therefore, it’s unlikely that people who already own a newer iPhone will be tempted to upgrade just yet.

Features of the iPhone 13 Mini
- A15 Bionic chipset
Punchy and intelligent, the A15 Bionic CPU is what powers the new camera features, racy browsing speeds and Apple’s Secure Enclave privacy set up. From processing to graphics, this chip is especially fast. It works so efficiently that the phone’s battery life has been extended by up to 90 minutes, compared to the iPhone 12 Mini.
- Design
Essentially, Apple has used the same design for the 13 Mini as they did for the 12 Mini. At first glance, nothing has changed aside from the expanded colour palette which now includes blue, pink, Midnight (black), Starlight (gold/silver) and red. The edges are still flat, there’s a tough Ceramic Shield front and the frame is made from aluminium. Most features are in their familiar spots, though the dual rear cameras are now in a diagonal arrangement, rather than a vertical one.
- Display
The 13 Mini has a display that is 28% brighter than previous models - according to Apple. 476 pixels per inch and 2340x1080 resolution make for a detailed screen and this is boosted with 1200 nits of brightness. You’ll also get Apple’s Wide Colour feature for brighter shades and True Tone, a technology that works to match the display's hues with any ambient lighting. Finally, Haptic Touch will give your finger a little vibration to acknowledge any longer presses.
- Connectivity
This is probably one of the smallest smartphones to offer 5G connectivity, it also has Wi-Fi, NFC, 5.0 Bluetooth and GPS on board. Using 5G, your experience of streaming or downloading content is speeded up hugely, but you can also join up to multiplayer games without experiencing any lag. 5G can drain the battery faster than other networks, so when you aren’t using it switch over to the 13 Mini’s Smart Data mode. This slows down the processor during quiet times and saves power.
- Storage
Apple has dropped its 64GB storage so this tiny handset has hefty 128GB, 256GB or 512GB options. The iPhone 13 Mini cost goes up for higher storage models, but you can always save your chunky 4K video files to a cloud service if you want to keep your expenditure down.
- Battery life
Compared to the iPhone 12 mini, Apple say the iPhone 13 mini will deliver 90 minutes more battery life. People who stream regularly throughout the day can expect their phone to last around 10 hours between power-ups. If you tend to browse, listen to music and chat, that time should extend to between 13 and 17 hours.
- TrueDepth Camera
The entire photographic system has been changed for the 13 series. A major update is the dual-lens rear camera which includes one 12MP Wide and one 12MP Ultra-Wide sensor. The wide camera can let in 47% more light than previously, for greater contrast and clearer shots. The ultra-wide lens also has an enhanced aperture, allowing it to capture better images in low-light conditions.
- Cinematic Mode
This feature moves the camera's focus during video recordings, seamlessly shifting from one focal point to another, creating a range of artistic effects. You can blur the background to make your subject pop and play with depth to produce more interesting footage.
- Smart HDR 4
Take a group photo and the Smart HDR 4 software will pick out up to four separate faces then optimise the tone, lighting and contrast for each.

What’s Great About the 13 Mini and What Could be Better?
Launched in late September 2021, the iPhone 13 Mini is part of a line-up that includes the larger iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. It’s the successor to Apple’s earlier mini handset, the iPhone 12 Mini, and this model is also the cheapest in its range.

FAQs on the iPhone Mini 13
Yes, although Apple was slightly later than Android to offer 5G support in its handsets, the technology is now standard in their new models. Along with the iPhone 13 Mini, the entire 13 and 12 range support 5G. Older Apple phones were not 5G enabled and they will never be able to offer the service. Therefore, if you have an older Apple phone, you’ll need to upgrade if you want 5G connectivity.
The iPhone 13 Mini has an IP68 rating. It is not entirely waterproof but it is quite robust. The phone should be safe if you accidentally spill a liquid on it and it will survive being submerged in up to 6m of water for 30 minutes. This rating also indicates that the phone is dust-tight, so particles won’t be able to enter the phone and cause damage.
No, this feature has been missing since the launch of the iPhone 8, when Apple removed it from their handsets. Instead, their flagship phones have relied on number or letter passwords and Face ID. Lots of owners expressed a preference for Touch ID and there were rumours it would be available, alongside facial recognition, on the new iPhone 13 range, but that isn’t the case.
Yes, you can either use a Qi Wireless charger or a MagSafe charger to power up an iPhone 13 Mini. If you want to charge your phone in a hurry, you can buy an adapter of 20W or higher. With one of these, the 13 Mini should have 50% battery life within 30 minutes.
No, Apple has stopped shipping the type of accessories that were included with pre-iPhone 12 models. You won’t get a charger or a pair of headphones in the box, but there are plenty available to buy separately. The only cable that’s included is a Lightning to USB Type C, but you’ll have to buy a plug if you plan to charge your phone through the mains.
