Vintage Digital; Revised edition (4 Sept. 2008)

Edward W. Said was University Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of Literature and of Kings College Cambridge, his celebrated works include Orientalism, The End of the Peace Process, Power, Politics and Culture, and the memoir Out of Place. He is also the editor, with Christopher Hitchens, of Blaming the Victims, published by Verso. He died in September 2003.

From the Iranian hostage crisis through the Gulf War and the World Trade Centre bombing, the West has been haunted by a spectre called 'Islam'. As portrayed by the news media - and by a chorus of government, academic and corporate experts - 'Islam' is synonymous with terrorism and religious hysteria. At the same time, Islamic countries use Islam to justify unrepresentative and often oppressive regimes.

In this landmark work, for which he has written a new introduction, one of our foremost public thinkers examines the origins and repercussions of the media's monolithic images of Islam. Combining political commentary with literary criticism, Edward Said reveals the hidden assumptions and distortions of fact that underlie even the most 'objective' coverage of the Islamic world.

Based on the recent media biased and one sided coverage of the world events is an indicator of what the world has become now.

Money and greed driven with those we look to for leadership failing us. The possibility of peace in the Middle East is unlikely as long as those are the factors. Keep a country unstable and or go in and destabilise them should they show any signs of stability helps us get their resources cheaper. (edited)

As soon as you learn about the offshore natural Gas field just of gaza it all starts to make sense. Gaza Marine fields, 20 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, it was found in 1999 by British gas (BG). The Palestinian Authority was “granted” the right to exercise sovereignty over its own maritime territory by the Oslo Accords in 1995 so the gas is Palestines British Gas(BG) wanted to run a pipeline but Israel objected and want the gas to run through israel ports and to supply Israel at a greatly reduced rate. i guess if Israel take Palestine the greatly reduced rate becomes zero. Who wouldve known. Its obviously a lot more complicated than just the gas but i would imagine that plays and awfully big part of what Israels end goal is.

If people had any inclination to hear the other side of a story, maybe the world would be different 😔

Why am I seeing political posts from a user I muted a long time ago ?

Perhaps because you choose to view it and comment on it the algorithms think you want more. If you don't want to see it then maybe best thing to do is look away and not click on it.

Still comes up on my feed. Maybe HUKD should give us the option to block users who have nothing better to do with their lives than look on Amazon for literature that suits their political leaning and try to present it as some kind of deal.
